The GG Marmont Shoulder Bag was released in July 2016 as part of the launch of the popular Gucci Marmont collection. The collection in general was an instant hit, but the shoulder bag in particular turned out Gucci’s best selling item of 2017 along with the Gucci leather GG belt from the same collection.
GG Marmont Shoulder Bag Design
The Gucci GG Marmont Shoulder Bag is a flap bag and is made from soft leather with a matelassé finish. In case you are wondering, a material (e.g. leather, wool, silk) has a matelassé finish when it appears to be padded / quilted but it actually has no padding within the material itself.
Just like all items in the Gucci Marmont collection, the Shoulder Bag features a brass hardware double G buckle which was actually used in Gucci designs back in the seventies. The bag has a spring closure and a leather and gold brass chain which allows it to be worn in multiple ways (doubled up, long and straight across the shoulder or crossbody). The bag has a heart stitched into the back of the leather exterior, and has no pockets on the outside.
On the other hand, the interior, which is lined with soft suede-like material has one main compartment with a zipped pocket at the back and a smaller slip pocket at the front.
Overall, the design of the Gucci GG Marmont Shoulder Bag is lovely. The classic flap bag style is a must-have for any handbag collection, and this bag is a good contender for that spot.
GG Marmont Shoulder Bag Durability
Having owned this bag for almost one year, I would say that the only downside of this bag is the fact that the leather is so soft, it makes the bag quite a delicate one.
About one month after purchasing it (with around four or five uses), I began to notice some scratches on the inside of the flap. Even though the scratches were on the inside and did not really show, it was quite a disappointing find after spending a whopping €1,890 on the bag.
This led me to stop using the bag for a week or so, after which I decided that I might as well use it, given that there was no point in owning a beautiful, expensive bag and leaving it to sit in the wardrobe, unseen and unappreciated.
Following that, I began to use the bag multiple times a week, and I have to admit that it has become the second most used bag in my handbag collection after my Louis Vuitton Neverfull. I tend to reach for the Gucci GG Marmont shoulder bag so often because it fits all my day-to-day necessities on the days where I am not carrying so much stuff that I need to carry a tote, it can take me from day to night, and it can also be worn in multiple ways, giving the bag a different style altogether.
In terms of wear, I have recently also started to notice some more signs at the end of the flap and also on the corners of the bag. That being said, these signs of wear only show when looking at the bag under a bright light and area to be expected after so much use.

The Gucci GG Marmont shoulder bag comes in three sizes – small, medium and large. The dimensions and should strap length for each size can be found in the table below:

You may have seen similar variants of the flap bag which are smaller in size. These are probably the super mini and mini versions of the bag. They are technically not the same as the bag covered in this review as they are more of a wallet-on-chain kind of bag and have slightly different features (like a non-adjustable strap).

The price of the bag has increased by almost 5% since October 2018, which is when I purchased my Medium size for €1,890.
