Design
Released in 2016, the YSL Sunset bag is one of the most beautiful bags designed by Saint Laurent. Featuring a flap with the standard interlaced YSL initials on the front in metal hardware, and a leather encased keyring on the side, the Sunset bag has an extremely sleek and elegant feel to it.
Practicality and Functionality
The Sunset bag has a chain and leather shoulder strap which is adjustable, thus allowing it to be worn in multiple ways – as a long shoulder bag, a crossbody bag, or doubled up as a shorter handbag.
The majority of the Sunset bags are made out of calfskin leather, which makes it very durable. Carriers of the YSL Sunset have confirmed this high durability with no visible scratches after several months of use.
Another plus point of the YSL Sunset bag is the fact that it is pretty spacious, and this is due to the gussets at the side which also add a nice touch to the overall design of the bag. It is worth keeping in mind, however, that the larger size of the bag can get pretty heavy due to the chain strap and the amount of items that the bag can hold – but that really depends on what you plan on carrying.
The bag is closed via a magnetic snap on the flap. Inside, both available sizes have two main compartments. The Medium size also has a front pocket, an interior slot pocket and a large slot pocket on the back.
YSL Sunset Sizes and Dimensions
The Sunset was previously available in Small, Medium and Large sizes. Saint Laurent currently lists the Medium in smooth leather, suede and crocodile-embossed leather, while the Small appears in selected seasonal and special materials. It appears that the Large is no longer part of the current collection.

The Small is best suited to a phone, cardholder and a few small essentials. The Medium gives you more useful everyday storage, although its structured compartments still favour flatter items over anything bulky. This is not a bag for anyone who carries a lot: you cannot fit a tablet, notebook or laptop inside. In my Medium, I can fit my phone, keys, wallet, some make-up and tissues, with room to squeeze in a few other small items if needed.
YSL Sunset Bag Available Colours and Materials
When it comes to colours and materials, the Saint Laurent Sunset collection certainly has a lot to choose from. Aside from the classic smooth calfskin leather version, the Sunset bag has been released in a range of finishes and materials including shiny patent leather, velvet, metallic laminated and crocodile embossed. You can also take your pick when it comes to the metal finishing of the chain strap and YSL initial hardware. The YSL Sunset bag is available in an array of colours, from neutral black, white and beige to more playful colours like red and green.
In the current collection, the Medium is offered in smooth calfskin, suede and crocodile-embossed leather. Small versions appear in selected materials including crocodile-embossed leather, patent leather and lizard, with colours and hardware changing from season to season.

I have owned the black Medium Sunset since September 2020 and still love it. I wear it from day to night, and it is a great size for both as long as I am not carrying too much. Its continued place in Saint Laurent’s collection since 2016 also gives it the staying power you would hope for from a long-term purchase.
