Back in 2013, Saint Laurent released one of their most classic and well-renowned designs to date – the YSL Sac de Jour bag. It is probably the most successful piece released by Hedi Slimane during his 4 year tenure as Creative Director of the French fashion house.

The name Sac de Jour literally translates into bag of the day. Featuring two top handles, a rigid rectangular shape and a removable leather padlock, it is definitely a timeless day bag that can pretty much take you from day to night in any season and more importantly, in any era. In fact, the YSL Sac de Jour has such a timeless look to it, that it is often compared to the all-time classic Hermès Birkin.

From its launch over years ago till this very day, the YSL Sac de Jour has always been a popular choice with anyone in the public eye, including celebrities with the likes of Angelina Jolie and Gigi Hadid and also YouTubers.

Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Sizes, Materials and Colours

One great thing about the Sac de Jour is the fact that it comes in four different sizes and also in a range of different colours and materials.

The four standard sizes of the YSL Sac de Jour bag are the following:

SizeDimensions
Sac de Jour Nano22 x 18  x 10.5 cm
Sac de Jour Baby26 x 20.5 x 12.5 cm
Sac de Jour Small32 x 25.0 x 16.5 cm
Sac de Jour Large40 x 31 x 21 cm

In terms of sizing, it is worth noting that the YSL Sac de Jour Small is actually pretty big and more of a Medium size (A Sac de Jour Medium has never existed). In fact, the width of the bag is exactly the same as a YSL LouLou in Medium, which measures at 32 x 22 x 11 cm.

When it comes to material, the Sac de Jour is made from 100% calfskin leather but is available in three finishes – smooth, grained and crocodile-embossed.

User Experiences

The Saint Laurent Sac de Jour has earned a reputation for being both stylish and functional, but user experiences vary depending on lifestyle, location and bag care. Many owners praise its structured silhouette, which holds up well over time, maintaining its elegant shape even with regular use.

However, in humid climates, some have reported issues with the edge paint wearing or melting, particularly around the handles and seams. That being said, handbag care is extremely important and people who live in humid climates should know to take the necessary precautions when storing leather goods, especially when not worn for longer periods of time. The weight of the bag is another consideration—while it feels luxurious and well-made, it’s undeniably on the heavier side, even when empty, which may not suit those looking for a lightweight bag option, especially for day-to-day wear.

That said, its versatile, minimalist design makes it a go-to piece for both formal and casual settings, pairing effortlessly with tailored workwear or relaxed weekend looks. The interior is spacious, with a zippered middle compartment to help keep essentials organised, though some users find the lack of additional pockets a missed opportunity.

YSL Sac de Jour Price

The pricing of the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour often varies and depends on both the size and the material of the bag. The price of the standard smooth and grained leather collection ranges between US$2,600 and US$3,900 depending on the size. You can also get your hands on other variants such as the crocodile embossed version or the newer supple vegetable leather version. The latter is rather pricey and the sac de jour in supple vegetable leather – large will set you back $5,900.

Given the fact that the Sac de Jour has been a permanent part of the YSL bag collection for a number of years and seems to be sticking around, it can definitely be considered an investment piece. When released in 2013, a Small Sac De Jour in grained leather cost around $US2,040. In 2025 this costs US$3,300.

Overall, Saint Laurent’s Sac de Jour is a great bag. It has a design which is timeless and will never go out of style, is available in a range of sizes, colours and finishes and is a luxury designer handbag that will definitely retain its value.
